From the historic sober high walls of the Bank of England to the brand new glass cladding of Foster and Partners’ 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin) skyscraper, the architecture of the City has always been an expression of wealth and quality.
Its focal points were Bank and St Paul's cathedral, London's most salient and important landmarks. But around the City's expanding edges are a mix of new developments that illustrate the variety of modern British architecture, and with Heron Tower now complete the architectural debate in the City concerning the issue of tall buildings continues.
