Architectural Education in the UK has remained stagnant with the ARB/RIBA Part 1/2/3 journey the common pathway to becoming an architect. However, with tuition fees at £9,000 a year and students finding it difficult to secure jobs, practices stating that students are not ready for practice and ‘BIM’ and ‘Sustainability’ two buzz words in the profession; the education of future architects needs to adapt with these changing times.
The Architecture Students Network (TheASN) are organising a Forum for students to have the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions to a panel of influential speakers as to how architectural education can change and bridge the gap between academia and practice. How will our future architects be taught?
The panel will be chaired by Will Hunter (Depupty-Editor, Architectural Review) and Vinesh Pomal (TheASN representative) with confirmed speakers:
Emma Matthews – Head of Qualifications, Architects Registration Board (ARB)
Oliver Richards - Vice-President Education, Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
Alex Wright, Chair of the Standing Conference for Heads of Schools of Architecture (SCHOSA)
Hari Phillips – Director, Bell Phillips Architects
Alex Maxwell - MArch student, University of Sheffield and active member of TheASN
TheASN are inviting at least two representatives from each UK school of architecture to attend the Forum. Part 1, 2 and 3 students on their placement years along with recently qualified architects and practioners are also welcome to attend. Those who are not able to attend will be able to leave their questions on Forum2013 website which will be put forward to the panel on the night.
Attendance is Free but places are limited so please confirm your attendance stating your name, school of architecture and year of study to asn@theasn.org.
