The Whitechapel Art Gallery is London’s most prestigious independent gallery and has been at the cutting-edge of art for one hundred years. It was the first public gallery dedicated to temporary art exhibitions and it has held significant shows of the great names of British 20th century art, such as David Hockney, Gilbert and George, Anthony Caro, and Gary Hume. It is also famous for being the first place in which internationally renowned art has been shown in the UK, for example: Picasso’s Guernica, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman.
